For optimal trapping conditions, is best to construct a platform 5 to 6 feet above the ground and long enough to extend 6 to 8 inches beyond each end of the designated trap. This provides the sparrows with a landing perch. The platform should be pre-baited for several days before a trap is introduced. After the birds become familiar with their new feeding spot, place a  trap in the middle of the platform. Place more grain in the middle of the trap, sprinkle some around the outer edges of the trap, and make sure to sprinkle some leading into the trap. The birds will funnel into the trap as they eat the grain.
