Do a search online for the perfect paint by number picture you would like to create or visit your local hobby store to see their collection. You can find paint by number sets in a variety of beautiful scenes and themes. Decide if you would like to work with acrylics or oil paints.

Select a place to work. If you plan on taking more than one day to complete your creation, choose an area where your work will not get disrupted or be in the way of other members of your household.

Lay down newspaper on the area where you'll create your masterpiece to minimize mess and lessen the amount of cleanup you'll have to do afterward. Keep rags handy in case of spillage.

Get a disposable cup that you won't be using as a drink cup in the future and fill it with lukewarm water to clean your brush. You can use water to clean acrylic paints and most oil paints that come in paint by number kits. If they require a special cleaner, most kits will come with a jar of it.

Get out all your materials: the canvas, paints, brush, and instructions.
